We have conducted numerous strategy and planning sessions for leadership teams and trustees. And frequently for both groups together.

Our approach is to focus strongly on participant engagement to ensure these sessions are enjoyable and stimulate thoughtful discussion.

Additionally, we have provided governance training for various charities, including sessions conducted for members of Hospice UK.

-  What does strategy look like in a fast moving, unpredictable world?

-  Do we develop detailed plans, or set broad principles to guide us?

-  What timescales should we be looking at?

These were some of the questions we discussed at a workshop with the Trustees and Directors of The Prince of Wales Hospice to initiate the hospice’s refresh of their strategy.

The day also included training on the responsibilities of Trustees. This looked at both the legal duties, but also how they can work most effectively with the executive team. Lindsay Hamer, Director of People, said

‘David’s relaxed style and emphasis on engaging with participants made the day informative and enjoyable. We also hugely benefited from the insights he shared on the drivers impacting our work. We are now building on the outcomes from the day as we develop the hospice’s strategy.’

The hospice sector is encountering unprecedented financial challenges. NHS contributions have stagnated, competition in fundraising is intensifying, and the cost of living crisis is having a severe impact.

To help them plan a way forward, St Nicholas Hospice asked us to facilitate a session for their CEO and a group of trustees to help them consider their future income generation plans.

'Thanks for your fabulous facilitation of our trustees session. Setting our own challenges and opportunities in a national context really helped our perspective and our determination of the way ahead in shaping our income generation directorate. We look forward to working with you in the future.'  Linda McEnhill, CEO

db associates led an away day for the trustees, directors and senior managers of Oakhaven Hospice. This gave them the chance to come together to reflect upon their achievements, but also talk about the future. Andrew Ryde, CEO said;

‘Oakhaven, like many hospices, has been looking to refine its strategy in view of the numerous challenges we are facing now and in the years ahead. We asked David to lead an away day to help us discuss these challenges and how we can respond to them. David’s knowledge and engaging facilitation skills ensured that the day fully met the brief and we now have a whole host of ideas to take forward and build into our future plans.’
